Our Story
Why Sayang Legal exists
Sayang Legal was established in Petaling Jaya with one intention: to give families in Selangor a place to discuss difficult legal situations without feeling hurried, judged, or overwhelmed by the process before they have even begun.
The practice grew out of a recognition that family law matters — separation, custody, the quiet renegotiation of arrangements that no longer fit — are rarely experienced as legal problems first. They are personal ones. The legal dimension arrives later, often uninvited. By the time a family member contacts a solicitor, they have usually been carrying the weight of the situation for some time already.
Our response to that reality was to build a practice where the first conversation is genuinely open-ended. We do not presume to know what a client needs before they have spoken. We sit, we listen, and we offer whatever clarity we honestly can. Sometimes that means recommending a formal legal step. Sometimes it means suggesting that a structured conversation between the parties would serve the family better. We are equally comfortable with both outcomes.
The name Sayang — a Malay word carrying warmth, care, and affection — is not incidental. It reflects how we believe legal counsel for family matters ought to be conducted: with genuine regard for the people involved, not only the legal problem they bring through the door.
Our Mission
To give every family the space to understand their situation before deciding what to do about it.
We measure the quality of our work not by the number of cases filed but by how clearly clients understand their position when they leave — and how well the outcome, whatever it is, reflects what the family actually needed.
Honesty About Outcomes
We tell clients when a legal route is unlikely to serve them well. That kind of candour is, we think, more respectful than false optimism.
Proportionate Action
The right legal response is often a lighter one. We advise the step that fits the situation, not the largest step available.
Respect for All Parties
Even in adversarial matters, we draft and conduct ourselves in a way that leaves space for the relationship to continue — particularly where children are involved.
The People
Who you will be speaking with
Zuraidah Azman
Principal Solicitor
Called to the Malaysian Bar in 2008, Zuraidah has focused on family and civil matters throughout her practice. She established Sayang Legal after recognising that many clients needed more listening time than a busy firm could provide.
Faizal Roslan
Associate Solicitor
Faizal handles custody variation matters and drafts settlement correspondence. He joined the practice in 2019 following four years in civil litigation and brings a measured, settlement-oriented perspective to each file.
Lim Kai Wen
Client Services
Kai Wen coordinates client appointments, manages communications, and ensures that all documentation reaches clients clearly and on time. She is typically the first person you will speak with when you contact the office.

Family Law in Selangor
A practice shaped by the needs of Malaysian families
Family law in Malaysia operates under both civil jurisdiction — primarily the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 — and, for Muslim families, the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984 and its state equivalents. Navigating which framework applies to a given family situation, and what options it provides, requires a solicitor who is current with the legislation and its application in the Selangor courts.
Sayang Legal advises on civil family matters and refers clients to appropriately qualified practitioners where a matter falls under Syariah jurisdiction. We are clear about the distinction from the first conversation, so clients are not inadvertently directed through a process that does not apply to their family's legal status.
Petaling Jaya and the surrounding areas of Selangor represent a family population with considerable diversity — in background, in household structure, and in the nature of the legal questions that arise within families. Our practice has been shaped by that diversity. We work with families across a range of circumstances and are accustomed to conducting consultations with cultural sensitivity and without presumption.
The three services offered — initial family counsel sessions, settlement letter drafting, and custody variation applications — represent the most common entry points for families approaching legal support for the first time. They are priced to reflect the work involved and no more.
